South Island Surfing Association (SISA) is the regional sporting body for surfing in Te Waipounamu.

Since 1992, SISA has supported South Island surfers, clubs and competitions, helping create pathways from grassroots surfing through to national and international competition.
SISA is powered by volunteers and affiliated Boardrider clubs from throughout the South Island.

Do I need any surfing experience?
No. Beginner surf lessons are designed for complete first-timers as well as people who have surfed a few times and want some help.
Do I need my own surfboard or wetsuit?
No. Surf schools provide a suitable surfboard and wetsuit as part of their beginner lessons.
Where are surf lessons held in Christchurch?
Most Christchurch surf lessons take place at Sumner Beach, the city’s main surfing beach and approximately 20 minutes from central Christchurch. New Brighton beach can be a good option too on the right day.
Can children learn to surf at Sumner?
Yes. There are kids’ surf lessons, holiday programmes and term-time programmes available at Sumner Beach. The appropriate programme depends on the child’s age and experience. The soft friendly waves at Sumner are ideal for kids.
Can adults learn to surf?
Absolutely. Many people have their first surf lesson as adults. Adult beginner lessons are available for complete beginners and people returning to surfing.
What happens if the surf conditions aren’t suitable?
Surf schools assess conditions and may alter, postpone or cancel lessons when conditions aren’t appropriate for the participants. Sometimes the best waves are on the rainy days so don’t let the weather put you off.
Can I just hire a surfboard instead of having a lesson?
Yes. Experienced or independent surfers can hire surfboards and wetsuits at Sumner without booking a lesson.
